Empowering Accessible Education in Nepal

According to the Nepal Census 2078 (2021), around 5.73% of school-aged children in Nepal live with hearing impairment. For many of these children, career opportunities remain painfully limited. As they grow older, a few may find jobs in the hospitality sector—but the dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, or lawyers often remain out of reach simply because they lack access to the right tools and resources.

At Himalayan Pariwar, we believe that hearing impairment should never be a barrier to ambition. That’s why we have initiated the project "Empowering Accessible Education in Nepal" with the vision of bridging the educational gap for children with hearing impairment. We’ve partnered with OLE Nepal (Online Learning Exchange) to create a free, inclusive online learning platform designed to deliver high-quality educational materials in sign language.

Our goal is simple: Turn dreams into reality for deaf children across Nepal by empowering them with the education they deserve.

Himalayan Pariwar Munich e.V. has been granted €50,000 from the GIZ Diaspora 2030 program to work on the "Empowering Accessible Education in Nepal" project over the next year. This initiative aims to create accessible digital learning materials for hearing-impaired students in Nepal, ensuring they have the tools to achieve their educational goals.

Key Objectives:

1. Develop Accessible Learning Materials
We aim to produce at least 90 curriculum-aligned digital learning modules, along with 10 interactive children’s stories enriched with Sign Language Interpretation and visual aids to make learning more engaging and effective.

2. Build Infrastructure
To support digital learning, we will provide essential devices—such as computers, servers, and other equipment—to Siddha Bahira Balak ko School in Surkhet, ensuring they have the resources needed to deliver inclusive education.

3. Distribute Content to Schools
We will collaborate with the National Deaf Federation Nepal and local schools to ensure the learning materials are widely distributed and effectively integrated into classrooms. Our target is to reach at least four schools with this content.

4. Teacher Training
Training sessions will be conducted to equip teachers with inclusive teaching strategies that better support hearing-impaired students and promote an accessible classroom environment.

5. Promote Best Practices in Accessibility
All materials will be designed to meet the specific needs of hearing-impaired learners, aligned with local educational standards and accessibility guidelines.

Supported Schools:
Siddha Bahira Balak ko School, Surkhet

Siddha Bahira Balak Ko School in Surkhet is a dedicated institution for children with hearing impairments. It currently serves 104 students—50 boys and 54 girls—with a team of 10 teachers (5 male and 5 female), including 3 deaf teachers who serve as inspiring role models.

However, the school lacks the necessary digital infrastructure to deliver quality, inclusive education. To bridge this gap, we will provide essential digital tools and infrastructure—such as computers, servers, and other learning equipment—to help create an accessible and empowering learning environment for deaf students.

Kavre Deaf School, Kavre

Kavre Deaf School in Kavre serves 120 students and is staffed by 12 teachers, including 9 female and 3 male educators. The school already has computer labs, providing a foundation for digital learning.

To enhance the educational experience, we will deploy our digital learning materials at the school. These materials, designed for accessibility, will empower deaf students by providing high-quality, inclusive educational content. Our goal is to further support the school’s mission and create a more dynamic, effective learning environment for all students.

Srijana Deaf School, Kaski

Srijana Deaf School in Kaski currently educates 150 students and has a dedicated staff of 18 teachers, including 10 female and 8 male educators.

The school is focused on providing quality education, but to further enhance the learning experience, we will introduce our digital educational materials. These resources will be integrated into the school's existing infrastructure to ensure that deaf students have access to inclusive, engaging, and high-quality learning content. Our initiative aims to strengthen the school’s educational offerings and support the students in reaching their full potential.

Adarsha Saula Secondary School, Lalitpur

Adarsha Saula Secondary School in Lalitpur serves 28 students, with a dedicated team of 5 teachers, including 3 female and 2 male educators. The school offers programs for both hearing-impaired and non-impaired students, ensuring an inclusive learning environment.

While the school is committed to providing quality education, it lacks the necessary digital resources to enhance the learning experience. To address this, we will introduce our digital educational materials, providing deaf students with access to inclusive, interactive, and high-quality content. This initiative will enrich their education and help empower all students to reach their full potential.
